… WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 AM EST SUNDAY…
A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 AM EST SUNDAY.
LOW PRESSURE OVER THE GULF COAST STATES WILL TRACK NORTHEAST THIS MORNING… AND WILL INTENSIFY AS IT RIDES NORTHEAST ALONG THE CAROLINA COAST THIS AFTERNOON… BRINGING A SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM TO THE WARNING AREA.
SNOW WILL CONTINUE TO OVERSPREAD THE REGION THIS MORNING… AND WILL BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES DURING THE IN THE MID-MORNING HOURS SATURDAY. THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO MIX WITH SLEET… AND POSSIBLY FREEZING RAIN AT TIMES BY LATER THIS MORNING… ESPECIALLY OVER NORTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA ALONG AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM JACKSON TO CURRITUCK.
TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS WILL AVERAGE 8 TO 14 INCHES OF SNOW ACROSS FAR SOUTHERN VIRGINIA AND NORTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA… WITH THE HIGHEST TOTALS ALONG AND WEST OF A LINE FROM EMPORIA TO WAKEFIELD AND WILLIAMSBURG. LESSER SNOW TOTALS ON THE ORDER OF 4 TO 8 INCHES ARE EXPECTED TOWARDS THE ALBEMARLE SOUND. SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS ACROSS THE TIDEWATER AREA OF VIRGINIA WILL AVERAGE BETWEEN 6 AND 10 INCHES OF SNOW.
CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS REGARDING THIS DEVELOPING WEATHER SITUATION.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… A WINTER STORM WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN SEVERE WINTER WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR. HEAVY SNOW AND/OR SLEET AND ICE ARE FORECAST TO ACCUMULATE IN THE AFFECTED AREAS CAUSING HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. THOSE WITH TRAVEL PLANS IN THE WARNING AREA ARE ADVISED TO CHOOSE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE… OR SHOULD USE EXTREME CAUTION IF TRAVEL IS UNAVOIDABLE.

The City of Portsmouth announces the following closings for Saturday, January 30, 2010:
Parks and Recreation programs and facilities will be closed
The Visitor Center will be closed
All City of Portsmouth Museums will be closed
All Portsmouth Public Libraries will be closed
PORTSMOUTH POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY
Portsmouth- Portsmouth Police are investigating a commercial robbery to the Bottom Dollar grocery store in the 3900 block of Twin Pines Rd. On January 28, 2009 at 6:25 A.M., a black male wearing jeans, a dark jacket, and a dark mask across his face entered the business and implied he had a weapon. The black male took an undisclosed amount of cash from the business. No one was injured in the robbery.
