Animal Control

The Animal Control Unit is a division of the Portsmouth Police Department. It is located at Police Headquarters at 711 Crawford Street, Portsmouth, Virginia.

Animal Control places animals that have been captured at the Portsmouth Humane Society at 2704 Frederick Blvd. in Portsmouth.

During the past several years, Animal Control has been responsible for the humane capture of sick, injured, vicious, destructive and stray animals, wild and domestic. In some instances, a humane trap must be placed to catch the animal. Animal Control will set the trap, remove the animal and retrieve the trap within one week.

The unit is also responsible for many animal investigations including:

  • cruelty
  • adequate care
  • licensing
  • dog fighting
  • occult
  • vicious/dangerous confinement compliance
  • animal bites
  • larcenies
  • These investigations are conducted in association with various units within the Portsmouth Police Department, neighboring agencies, State Police, and the United States Department of Agriculture.

The Animal Control Unit conducts educational classes at schools and civic leagues.
